New Portraits of John Wood the Elder and son discovered

Exciting news!!! After a decade of hard work by Bath historians has uncovered a part of Bath’s Georgian history lost in Italy.

There was never a publicly known portrait of John Wood the Elder or his son John Wood the Younger. Through the work of Bath’s History Research Group traced two miniatures of the men to Florence. The photographs were unveiled to the public at an event at St Mary’s Church in Swainswick, where John Wood and all his family are buried.

David Crellin, secretary of the research team, was encouraged to learn more about John Wood because he served in the church.

"I think it matters a lot what people look like. We associate with people we know, and if you can see what someone looked like, that makes quite a difference.

"The two miniatures are not actually identified as John Wood and his son, and we had to eliminate a lot of people, as well as be sure who we were looking at."
